Assignment

Based on our project concept's focus on the human heart and its deviation from mimicking natural creatures, I may not be using this technique for the project. However, I do find the technique of 3D printing on fabric to be fascinating and I would love to try to recreate the dragon scale pattern.

Dragon scales have always fascinated me because of their mythical and powerful nature. In Chinese mythology, dragon scales are believed to be the most untouchable part of the dragon, also known as "reverse scales". It is said that only the emperor was allowed to wear robes made of dragon scales, which were believed to provide amazing protective power.

The Chinese dragon is a creature like no other, with its body composed of different animal parts like the belly of the frog, scales of the carp, claws of the hawk, and palm of the tiger, among others. As a result, it has a unique appearance that sets it apart from Western depictions of dragons.

In creating a dragon scale pattern in Rhino for 3D printing on fabric, I wanted to capture the essence of this mythical creature's scales so I made the edge sharper.

Because the scales of the dragon are neatly arranged, I did not use the Voronoi pattern learned in class. To create the overlapping effect of the dragon scales, I used a "Series" component to offset each row of cells horizontally.

I referred to this man's approach to create a base for the scales to support them more firmly, with an angle of about 20 degrees. He also created a ring inside it for assembling the scales, but it's beyond my skills for now.

Unfortunately, I was not able to practice it because 3D printers are fully occupied at the end of the semesteršŸ„² But I do find the technique extremely thrilling, and if I have the opportunity in the future, I would love to create a dress similar to Sophy Wang's that utilizes 3D printing throughout the entire body, rather than just incorporating it into certain parts.
